Athene Demon Hunter Build – Patch 1.0.3
Don’t know who Athene is? Take some time to look at a few videos of him killing Diablo naked or blind folded. Such a player must be mopping the floor with elites and champions. He has some of the best in slot items for his Demon Hunter. Still, great gear needs a great build. After seeing his videos, it is easy to anticipate what kind of skills he will use. Athene loves dealing huge amounts of damage but he compromises on survivability. It seems that he doesn’t care if he dies too often if he manages to deal incredible critical hits. We decided to strip down his build and put it under the scope for our readers.

The Mechanics:
The build has only one Hatred consuming skill. Hungering Arrow will be the main attack but also a steady source of Hatred. Impale will be the main damaging skill for more difficult packs such as champions and elites. To be noted that Hungering Arrow uses Devouring Arrow. This rune becomes extremely useful when used in conjunction with Sharpshooter it can help land a series of critical hits. The Sharpshooter passive skill maintains its effect for one second after the first critical hit. Devouring Arrow is a slow attack and the projectiles move differently from other attacks. The player is able to send up to 4 shots before the 100% critical hit chance effect is reset.
The next damaging skill is Rain of Vengeance. Athene uses it without any rune. It works very well against multiple targets and it can clear trash easily. The next 3 skills on the other hand, provide a bit of damage avoidance. Next in line we have Preparation for a full Discipline restore with a 30% chance to not trigger the cooldown due to the rune selection. All this discipline will be used for our next two avoidance moves. We have Shadow Power for a huge HP restore and Smoke Screen for some invisibility.
Passive skills are mainly aiming to boost the damage. We have discussed above how Sharpshooter works very well with Devouring Arrow. To make it even more effective, Athene used Archery and a Crossbow for 50% extra critical hit damage. Last but not least we have Steady Aim with makes sense for a Demon Hunter with a glass cannon build. Melee attacks will be avoided anyway so it will not be difficult to maintain a 10 yard distance.
The build requires a lot of critical hit chance and critical hit damage. Athene has around 49% crit hit chance and 330% increased critical hit damage. Combined with Sharpshooter, his DPS goes well over 150.000. He does have around 80k HP which should provide more than enough survivability.
