Builds – Monk Inferno Tank LoH/DPS/Crit – Life Sweeper

Monk Inferno Tank LoH DPS Crit - Life Sweeper

Level Required - 58

Build thanks to Healthygamer

Despite the recent nerf on the attack speed item modifier, the Monk is still capable of dealing decent damage in Inferno.

His passive increase of attack speed when dual wielding compensates the absence of IAS on gear and with decent critical hit chance and damage increase, things get easier. Actually, the Diablo 3 Monk can go a long way with mediocre gear and a decent build.

Let’s have a quick glimpse at a build we call “Life Sweeper“:

Left Mouse Button – Fists of Thunder with the Thunderclap rune

Right Mouse Button – Sweeping Wind with the Cyclone rune

Action Key 1 – Binding Flash with the Faith in the Light rune

Action Key 2 – Serenity with the Ascension rune

Action Key 3 – Breath of Heaven with the Blazing Wrath rune

Action Key 4 – Mantra of Evasion with the Backlash rune

Passive Skill 1: The Guardian’s Path

Passive Skill 2: Seize the Initiative

Passive Skill 3: One With Everything

The Mechanics Of The Build

The main reason why this build works is the huge life on hit gain.

Fists of Thunder is a skill with fast attack speed. The third hit will damage all the surrounding mobs and the life on hit will be applied for all targets. When used in large crowds, the life gain becomes phenomenal.

Sweeping Wind is also a great source of damage that can add some Life on Hit gain. With a high enough critical hit chance and decent attack speed it should stack up very fast and combined with Fists of Thunder, it should be permanently up during sustained combat.

Besides these two damaging skills, not much else is needed to bring down packs of mobs or even bosses. Serenity is added to the mix to aid in critical situations. The 3 seconds of invulnerability are more than sufficient to gain back some health to avoid an unnecessary death.

The combination of skills seems to work excellent even with mediocre gear. 30k HP, 300 to all resist and a decent armor and dodge value is enough to make it work. With these stats in place, the player can focus on building some damage. This can be easily done by stacking crit chance and crit damage. Attack speed should not be a major concern as 1.8 attacks per second is more than enough.

This build is meant to work with two one handed weapons to make use of the bonus from The Guardian’s Path passive skill. With it, Spirit regeneration is boosted to aid with the regen and enable the usage of Sweeping Wind at a more frequent rate. Additionally, the passive gives a nice 15% attack speed which is a nice bonus to have for some extra DPS.

Take a look at the stats and gear.

  1. “Additionally, the passive gives a nice 15% attack speed which is a nice bonus to have for some extra DPS.”

Guardian’s Path is +15% chance to dodge attacks while dual wielding not to attack speed.

  2. Is this build any good for inferno mode as you have not stated?? A does it work ok with the low resists?? Thanks

    • Sorry about the newb comment above, was young to the monk world, just wanted to say I’m really enjoying this build, but my LoH is only 300 which is making it quite hard, all other stats etc and pretty decent with all resistances at 520, dex 1400, 32k Hp and dps sits around 26k unbuffed, with crit hit at 30.5% crit hit dmg 338% just need better weps, what I wanted to ask was is there a min cap for the LoH? 300 isn’t enough for sure as I take too much damGe and have you tried the conviction mantra with this? Look forward to your reply

  3. Hi Earl,
It is difficult to appreciate what would be the min LoH cap for this build. The sustainability of a LoH build is conditioned by the damage mitigation of your monk. 300 is very low, regardless of your armor and resists. Basically, the more damage you mitigate, the less LoH you would need. You can survive with decent armor and all resist. Also, LoH becomes very effective when attack speed is higher. Try to get some cheap experimental gear and fool around to see when things go your way.

I would personaly get some cheap all resist and armor gear with some LoH, compromising on DPS, just to check the survivability. When I find the right values, I would switch to better gear, maintaining the survivability stats and LoH but with more dex, crit hit and damage.

  4. Thanks for the above adivce it has hoped me out alot :-) I’ve been messing around with some different things with this build and wanted your opinion. With the massive boost from SSS would you choose that over serenity now for that extra dps? And on the video you sid about resolve. Being good to use? Would you drop guardians path for it? Look forward to you reply and keep up the good work! Went for a 30min run earlier and hitting the gym in morning, chest and triceps

    • Things have changed a bit as this build was added when patch 1.0.3 was live. It is still viable and Guardian’s Path is a good choice for more dodge or spirit regen for a DPS build based on a two handed weapon setup. Check out our BELLS! build :)

  5. I like the concept but I have a question. Correct me if I am wrong but the Guardians Path only gives the 25% spirit regen bonus when utilizing 2 handed weapons???
    Thanks,
    Mike A

    • Yes. If you go for a two handed weapon, you will get some spirit regen bonus. It is 35%. Two handed weapons can work very well on a Monk with the BELLS! build. Feel free to check it out. I find it very entertaining and it is up to date for patch 1.0.4
