Diablo 3 Patch 1.0.5 Brings The Trail Of Cinders Nerf

Diablo 3 Patch 1.0.5 Brings The Trail Of Cinders Nerf

From time to time, even the experts commit mistakes. This time Blizzard came forth with a post stating that Diablo 3 Patch 1.0.5 will come with the Demon Hunter Trail of Cinders nerf. In case you don’t know what’s going one, Trail of Cinders is a rune for the Vault skill. Apparently a coding error has been done and the skill deals too much damage.

A few days ago we covered a new and interesting Inferno Demon Hunter build called Bowling Ball. The build focused on the usage of this particular rune and skill. In Blizzard’s vision, Discipline skills should not be used as main damage deals. They were meant to be tactical skills meaning that it will get nerfed. Right now, the rune deals 1500% weapon damage as fire over 3 seconds. This kind of damage makes it a great main damage dealer. Not to mention that the way the damage is inflicted is just great. You get to leap back through the enemies in an acrobatic way, leaving a trail of fire behind and dealing a ton of damage to the unlucky fools that step into it.

Right now, the skill deals 100% weapon damage 5 times per second for 3 seconds. In simple words, the fire trail will tick 15 times in 3 seconds, dealing 100% per tick. The blue post stated that this is not what they had in mind for the skill.

The patch will change the way the skill works. In the development stage of Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4, Trail of Cinders was supposed to deal 100% weapon damage per second for 3 seconds, totaling 3 ticks. This means that the skill should only deal 300% weapon damage as fire over 3 seconds.

On the message board, the announcement got a lot of Demon Hunter players to post unhappy replies. A lot of Diablo 3 fans enjoy the new Trail of Cinders and use it in their builds. Several of them questioned Blizzard’s mistake as the tooltip does say that the skill deals 1500% weapon damage. If it is just a coding bug why would the tooltip show the damage exactly as it is right now. Apparently, not all skills are manually updated. Just like many others, Trail of Cinders is updated automatically as the tooltip is pulling damage data from the game. Right now, it calculates automatically the total damage dealt, summing up all the ticks over the three seconds. Intriguingly enough, the notes for patch 1.0.4 mention that the rune will deal 1500% weapon damage. Some players questioned the statement that the rune was intended to deal 300% weapon damage since the actual damage, the tooltip and the patch notes mention 1500%.

So far, there is no official date announced for the release of Patch 1.0.5. Updates regarding implementation of this patch are still pending as the American Developer just began the work on the upcoming patch. On the other hand, Blizzard seems to be open for suggestions and several players came with their own ideas how the skill can be nerfed a bit but without making it completely useless for builds that rely on Trail of Cinders.

  1. A good solution could be to leave it as it is or increase it a little bit to 1800%/2000% maybe but make Vault only with the rune Trail of Cinders to cost… I don’t know 25/30 dicipline so it cannot be that spammable.
