Diablo 3 tops NDP charts since StarCraft 2 with Millions Sold!

NPD released the sale numbers for May 2012 and Diablo 3 managed to perform admirably when compared with other games. If we were to compare the sales to the past years, we can see a 28% drop and this trend has been going down for several years. The month of May 2012 managed to reach $516.5 while in 2011 sales were recorded around $718.9.
With more than 6 million copies sold, Blizzard’s PC exclusive title seems to be unbeatable. The number two spot in the charts is Max Payne 3 but according to one of the developers, the game has been selling 50% less than L.A. Noir. Even so, Blizzard’s position in the charts is well secured and it is only targeting the PC gaming community while the competitor titles are available for multiple platforms. Max Payne did not manage to pose much threat regardless of the fact that the game was available for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
The previous times before, Blizzard was in the charts was when StarCraft II was launched. It was the bestselling PC game of July 2010.
Most Blizzard games have released managed to sell in record numbers. This is also closely tied to the legacy that Blizz games leave behind. Diablo II needed one year to sell just as many copies as the latest installment. This indicates that Blizzard knows how to build a community around a title, creating enthusiasm and anticipation for eventual future games that continue the story of an already established lore. Diablo 3 managed to sell in less than two weeks over 6.3 million copies which is more than half of the total number of World of Warcraft subscribers.
Blizzard proved that PC gaming is not dead and they can still deliver record breaking titles and there is nobody else to challenge them. Without a doubt they will soon pass the 10 million mark in sales for Diablo 3.
