Max Payne 3 Beats Diablo 3 Box Sales! Yes. Overall Sales. No

Recently, GfK released some sale numbers for Diablo 3 and Max Payne 3 to reveal some sort of an anomaly.
The charts show some unbelievable numbers that tent to be far off from reality. Max Payne has more copies sold than Diablo.
This can’t be true. It is hard to believe that a game which was expected for 12 years was outsold by Max Payne. Truth be told, Max Payne 3 doesn’t not even seem like a sequel. It looks like a brand new game that spoiled the feel and atmosphere of the previous two titles. It is no longer a noir story and Max himself looks like a bald Diablo 3 Monk. How can this happen?
It is quite simple. The entire chart is simply irrelevant as it does not count the digital copies sold. Also, Diablo 3 is a PC exclusive while Max Payne will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox.
It is clear that measuring only the box sales does not provide relevant numbers. The sales for the digital copies of Diablo 3 have not been released yet but when they will be made public, this myth will be shattered. It is also an act of nativity to believe that Max Payne outsold the much awaited Blizzard title.
Also, if we look at the GfK numbers, the difference between the two is only 8000 box copies.
No doubt Blizzard designed Diablo to be another cash cow. The digital sales numbers brought in more profit as it shares the same price as the box version but it involves less costing due to a more efficient distribution. In fact, the digital version of the game has been heavily advertised and it would be foolish to think that the volumes in sales were not significant.
Combined with the revenue generated by the Real Money Auction House, Max Payne is surely no match for Diablo 3.

Number cruncher Chart-track GfK doesn’t track digital sales. Without them, Diablo 3 boxed sales were 8000 copies behind Max Payne 3′s – not a lot, considering the size of IPs involved. Full here

According to the charts from GfK, Max Payne moved 8,000 more box copies than Diablo 3, and you should be able to spot the error in calculations almost immediately.
Overlooking the fact that Max Payne was released for PC, PS3 and Xbox, while Diablo 3 is PC only, GfK does not track digital downloads of the game, only box copies. For weeks now, Blizzard has been offering pre-purchases of the game online, and you could download Diablo 3 in its entirety before release in order to simply click a button and install on launch day, and customers can continue to buy it through them at any time since then. That winner was Max Payne 3which was Rockstar/Take 2′s first number once since L.A. Noire released almost a year ago. It’s the first Max Payne title to debut at number one, outperforming the launch week of Max Payne 2 by almost 10 to 1. Max Payne 3 was also the first game in the series not to be developed by Remedy Entertainment.
Blizzard has nothing to be ashamed of with Diablo 3, however. Despite finishing second, Diablo 3became the 12th fastest selling PC game in the UK ever, selling more than either of the last twoFootball Manager titles. Full here
