Reassurance that Diablo 3 Public games are safe? You decide.
So far, we have seen how World of Warcraft accounts have been hacked. In the years that have passed since it was launched, the WoW fans got to see fake emails from hackers, keyloggers, copycat websites and so on.
The hackers will do almost anything to steal an account and strip it of anything of value because truth be told, a battle.net account is worth some money.
In all this time, Blizzard managed to get accustomed to such situations and in most of the cases, the accounts were restored and given back to the rightful owner.
However, when Diablo 3 hit the markets, things changed a bit.
Many Diablo 3 players never had a battle.net account before since they haven’t played other Blizzard games. These individuals were not aware of the little scams that hackers use to get control over an account.
Many of these gamers got fooled by these tricks and had their accounts compromised. The same thing happened for a Eurogamer editor. Unaware of how things really happen he posted an article that suggested that his account was hijacked when he joined a public game.
Several other websites saw the article and picked up the story as if it was a fact.
Blizzard responded immediately, clearing things and separating fact from fiction. Currently, there is no possible way that a hacker can steal an account just by having other players join his public session.
This claim that such methods are possible is not real as it is not technically possible. Or is it? Check out blues @Blizz.
No. Not that. It flies in the face of all logic and evidence to the contrary. This is a very serious matter. A company doesn’t just get away with covering up something like that.
It’s an incredibly serious allegation and the ramifications would be so much more far-reaching than what you’ve witnessed. Again, I understand you’re upset, but I caution you not to perpetuate this nonsense any further.
The announcement managed to clear to questions the players had and now everyone seems to be fully aware of how things work once you get yourself a battle.net account. To prevent such situations, Blizzard introduced a few years back the battle.net authenticator which is an added layer of protection that is supposedly impossible to break.

You can’t get hacked from playing public games in Diablo III. Get an authenticator, whether it’s the physical device or the smartphone program, and your account will be as safe as you can make it. Remember that Blizzard gains nothing from lying to you about your account security but a brief reprieve in a storm of bad PR and legal troubles. Full here
