Poison Dart is the Witch Doctor’s starting attack skill, and the unruned form is about as straight forward as a skill can be. Literally! The Witch Doctor whips out a blow pipe and spits one dart in a straight line, which deals poison damage on impact with some additional poison drain over time. Though the firing animation is kind of slow, the dart flies quickly, and I had no trouble hitting even moving targets. (There are very few monsters in the beta that do anything other than advance upon you in a straight line at a predictable speed.)
It’s a straighforward no-nonsense and quite reliable skill in low levels, so it’s a really good skill to invest with.
Runestones can be used to enhance the Witch Doctor’s Poison Dart, giving various special effects that make it deadlier still, like stun, additional fire damage, mana regeneration, more poison darts, and slow.
Flaming Dart gives the Witch Doctor the ability to make his Poison Dart deal 160% Fire damage instead, dealing all damage at once, and it’s especially good to use, for those targets that have a decent health regeneration rate.
Splinters allows the Witch Doctor to shoot three poison darts at once, dealing 60% Poison damage to each target hit. It’s a good way of dealing damage when you’re in a tight situation, when swarmed and all the other skills are still in cooldown.
Numbing Dart reduces the target’s movement speed by 60%, a good way of ensuring that the target doesn’t escape or the target can’t chase after you. It works in both defensive and offensive ways.
Spined Dart is a good way of keeping mana alive to spam skills, since it gives 24.5 mana every time the dart hits a target.
Snake to the Face is very fascinating, since it gives a chance for the Poison Dart to transform into a snake, giving 25% chance of stunning the target for 2 seconds.
